YELLOW BOX BURL (Eucalyptus melliodora) is medium in size to occasionally tall tree. Yellow Box is a fast growing evergreen tree and can grow up to 100' in height. Yellow Box has perfumed, cream colored blossoms which are an excellent source of honey, hence its botanical name Melliodora which means honey-scented. It flowers from September to March. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). Yellow Box prefers a sunny position in a moderately fertile well-drained moisture retentive, neutral soil. But tolerates poor and dry soils, especially those low in mineral elements. Established plants are drought tolerant.
Yellow Box is considered to be the best native tree for honey production, the honey produced has a delightful golden color and an excellent taste.
The timber is pale brown, dense and heavy, resistant to decay and has been used for sleeper cars, posts and poles and bridges. Yellow Box is not known as a furniture timber.
