This beautiful handcrafted crochet hook is made from Macassar Ebony.  The hooks are shaped with a larger handle to relieve stress on the hand and wrist when crocheting. They also have an Ergonomic shape that fits nicely in the hand.

Because this hook is handcrafted there will be variation in appearance, grain, size and color. While there are slight variation the basic Ergonomic shape is maintained. No two handcrafted hooks will be the same!

Macassar Ebony  (Diospyros celebica) This wood is variegated, heartwood is dark brown to black, streaked throughout with bands of grayish-brown, yellow-brown or pale brown, nearly always wide striped. It is considered a highly valuable wood for turnery, fine cabinet work and joinery, and is much sought for posts (tokobashira) in traditional Japanese houses. That is why Japan used to be the main importer for this wood.
The tree grows up to 65 feet in height under favorable circumstances, although such trees are rarely seen nowadays. Since Macassar Ebony has been a woodworkers favorite for centuries, most of it has been felled and used in high quality furniture. The wood is often defective, showing cracks, and in particular heart shakes and splits. It is not easy to dry and is best given ample time for this. Converting logs into boards as soon as possible is recommended.
Macassar Ebony is exceptionally beautiful species ebony has been much appreciated by woodworkers all over the world through the past two centuries it has now become a very scarce and expensive timber. The small available amounts on the market have led to very high prices, Macassar Ebony nowadays belongs to the highest priced timbers on the world, and the region of growth is quite restricted.
Macassar Ebony grows in East Indies, Philippines, Celebes Islands. 
Other name are Striped Ebony, Indian Ebony, Camabon, Tendu, Coromandel, Temru and Tunki.
