Custom Rings for Solid Woods

Koa or Hawaiian Koa (Acacia Koa) is widely considered to be the most beautiful and useful of Hawaii’s native hardwoods, and along with Monkey Pod and Mango, it is the most common Hawaiian species to be imported into the lower 48 United States. Because of its nearly equal tangential and radial shrinkage, Koa tends to be quite stable regarding environmental changes in humidity. Koa color can be highly variable, but tends to be medium golden or reddish brown, similar to Mahogany. There are usually contrasting bands of color in the growth rings, and it is not uncommon to see boards with ribbon-like streaks of color. Boards figured with wavy and/or curly grain are also not uncommon.
Although Koa is naturally quite abundant on the islands of Hawaii, most Koa forests have been cleared for grazing pastures; and since young Koa seedlings are edible for grazing animals, most new trees are prevented from growing to larger size. As a result, mature Koa trees are either scarce, or in hard-to-access mountainous locations, and the price of Koa is likely to only increase further in the future.

These Koa hooks are absolutely lovely! They feel so light and warm in my hand - very comfortable to use. And they glide so well through the yarn. Bryan does wonderful work.

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. Hawaiian Koa wood is very special to me as it only grows in Hawaii. It's considered a sacred and Koa translates to brave, bold, fearless, or warrior which often evokes times of the past when life was much simpler, not easier, but simpler. Bryan personally hand carves these beauties which makes then ALL CUSTOM MADE. The craftsmanship, finish and overall aesthetics are stellar ... but the most important is that the wooden hooks are very smooth on the fabrics I use for crocheting.

I have always wanted a koa ukulele, sadly they are out of my price range. When I saw that Nelsonwood had koa crochet hooks I was so excited and ordered one right away. It is so amazing, it feels so great in my hand and I can crochet for hours. I adore all my Nelsonwood hooks.
