Angle or Cross Cut refers to the direction of the grain to the cut of the blade. By cutting the wood this way the hook will show greater variance of patterns, color and some end grain compared to cutting with the grain.

Zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis) is an imported hardwood and is pale golden brown to pinkish-brown with pronounced dark brown streaks giving the quartered surfaces a zebra-stripe appearance. The grain in interlocked. This wood has a coarse texture and lustrous surface. Zebrawood is heavy, hard and strong The wood of Microberlinia is imported from Central Africa, (Gabon, Cameroon, and Congo). The heartwood is a pale golden yellow, distinct from the very pale color of the sapwood and features narrow streaks of dark brown to black. Zebrawood can also be a pale brown with regular or irregular marks of dark brown in varying widths. It is almost always quartersawn to get the exciting alternating color pattern.
It is a heavy and hard wood with a somewhat coarse texture, often with an interlocked or wavy grain. The interlocked grain of this wood, like that of many tropical woods, can make it difficult to work.

The hook is great. I bought it for amigurumi. The actual “hook” end is 3.25 mm and made of Gabon Ebony. It is nice and strong, good for tight stitches. The crochet hook is very comfortable in the hand, and the wood is beautiful and polished to a nice shine. This is my third Nelson Wood crochet hook, so far they have all been perfect.
