                         MYRTLEWOOD
MYRTLEWOOD - (Umbellularia californica ) The Myrtle tree grows 60-120’ in the wild. It is very slow growing putting on only 1-12" of growth during each of its first few years. They may take 80-120 years to reach full size. It is often multi trunk but can be kept pruned to a single trunk tree. When growing in the open it tends to have a dense, rounded , ‘gumdrop shape’. On a shady hillside it grows much taller and narrower. Myrtlewood tolerates many conditions, but grows best and fastest in deep soil with lots of compost, ample water and full sun. some of the uses of this wood are Turnery items, novelties, veneer, furniture, cabinetwork, keel blocks and friction blocks.

The bowl below is Myrtlewood Burl. It's 100 percent burl... all of it! It measures over 19" across and 3 1/4" tall.

The bowls below were all made from the same block of burl of the above bowl.

The below bowl was made from a block of Myrtlewood that was used as makeshift work bench till I found it.

This bowl below is a very special one. A close friend in France is now the owner. She loves it because of the face inside the bowl!
Look close you can see it!
